Humanity needs a more enlightened approach to enterprise because Enlightened Enterprises can become essential drivers of the New Enlightenment our world now needs.
Why Enlightened Enterprise?
This is the proposition at the heart of a programme of inquiry, dialogue and practical learning being convened by the Enlightened Enterprise Academy. We are inviting thinkers, leaders, specialists, practitioners and people with different experiences and perspectives to examine the case for a more enlightened approach to enterprise, challenge its assumptions and help develop what it would mean in practice.
Enterprise is central to how we shape our collective future. The term includes organised human endeavour across the private, public and plural sectors, from businesses and public services to universities, charities and civic organisations. Through these enterprises, people mobilise knowledge, resources, technology and power. They influence how value is created and shared, whose voices are heard, and how society responds to the challenges it faces.
Our technological and productive capabilities have expanded dramatically, but our ability to understand their wider consequences and act wisely together has not kept pace. Knowledge is dispersed across disciplines, professions and institutions. Decisions made within one organisation can have consequences across whole systems, while many of the most important challenges exceed the understanding and agency of any single organisation.
The opportunity is therefore larger than making organisations more efficient, innovative or adaptable. It is to develop enterprises that are clearer about their purpose and responsibilities, more capable of connecting different forms of knowledge, and better able to learn and act with others, across industries and sectors, as circumstances change.
Two online dialogues on each of the five days will examine the case for a more enlightened approach to enterprise, subject the propositions to informed challenge and begin developing a shared agenda for learning and action over the following year.
Ten dialogues. Five days. One continuing inquiry.
The inaugural conference is part of a continuing cycle. It is not a ne-off event.

Around 40 hours of pre-conference interviews before the conference will be followed by the ten 90min live dialogues which will also be recorded. The conference and all this content will then form the basis of the year long inquiry conducted as the Enlightened Enterprise Participatory Learning Network.
All members of the academy get access to the conference, all the content and what emerges from the research in the year that follows. That will culminate in the second annual conference and the cycle will continue to repeat to produce a growing body of knowledge and practice that is designed to support the leaders of Enlightened Enterprises.
The Key Contributors to the conference have each agreed to be interviewed by Paul Barnett, Founder of the Enlightened Enterprise Academy, before the conference. They will also take part in one of the 90 minute live and interactive online dialogues. There will be approximately 40 key contributors and their details will be added as they confirm their participation.
